BAT-NL #1 Day One

Friday the 19th of December together with 12 valued colleagues I attended the first BAT meeting in the Netherlands. A peer conference for agile testers. The topic was “Your Passion”. All participants had prepared an experience report, somehow related to that topic. The Friday evening was mostly intended for setting the intention for the conference and delivering the schedule for Saturdays sessions.

After a small introduction it started out with a keynote by Luca Maraschi. He challenged us with the brain-breaking concept of floating point numbers in Javascript. For us testers it is no doubt hard to accept or follow the outcome of the following calculations:

0.1 + 0.2 == 0.3 -> false
0.1 + 0.2 -> 0.30000000000000004

Luca went into great detail to explain the reasons behind this outcome and his quest for the answer. Before you spend the upcoming year trying to solve this riddle, there are numerous resources you can consult (an example is here). However if these resources don’t resonate with your intellectual abilities (like mine), you should invite Luca to explain in a more human understandable and very entertaining matter.

Once everyone got the chance to pitch their stories, we voted and prioritised the list, and the conference program was born. After dinner we headed to the hotel lobby to get into a more launchy continuation of the conference. We tortured each other with number- and blackstory riddles. Which finally proofed that creative thinking sometimes beats mathematical strength.
